AI Update – September 2023

On Thursday, September 14th we looked at some of the developments in AI which were hitting the news, and played about with some of the main Large Language Models: ChatGPT, Edge AI assistant and Bard.

AI Has been in the news a lot recently – and is stirring up all walks of life!

We need a new language to describe these things:

AI is finding its way into everything, including authoring books:

Mushroom pickers urged to avoid foraging books on Amazon that appear to be written by AI

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/sep/01/mushroom-pickers-urged-to-avoid-foraging-books-on-amazon-that-appear-to-be-written-by-ai

The titles include “Wild Mushroom Cookbook: from forest to gourmet plate, a complete guide to wild mushroom cookery” and “The Supreme Mushrooms Books Field Guide of the South-West” They recommended smelling and tasting wild mushrooms to see if they were good to eat! ….. every sample of text had a rating of 100% on its AI detection score, meaning that its systems are highly confident that the books were written by a chatbot such as ChatGPT.”

Hence self-publishers must declare if self-published content in Amazon is AI generated

Remember that I mentioned the App called “Replika” back in June? – This is a chatbot designed to create a companion avatar.

Well, Avatar girlfriends have become big business:, …”A year from its release, image generation tool Stable Diffusion is being put to work by Romania-headquartered startup DreamGF to help its customers find the AI-generated girl of their dreams…The company says it has thousands of users signing up every day — and has already hit profitability. .. DreamGF subscriptions range from €10 to €97 per month, with higher tiers offering more perks: customers paying the big bucks get sent more nude photos from their “girlfriends” and are able to have more than one. Dimitrov says his company is now working on an AI boyfriend product, which will be marketed at both men and women.”

How will this affect interpersonal relationships ? Can anyone live up to the “perfection “ created by an AI Chatbot?

In China – the use of Avatars has taken off. Take a look at this France 24 “Reporters” episode: In China, artificial intelligence extends its hold on daily life • FRANCE 24 English

…what is the world coming to? An article in the Economist suggests that businesses which do not change to adopt AI will be left behind, and the UK is currently pretty slow.

The film industry is seeing extensive, disruptive changes:

On the one hand, AI can create complex worlds, improve the quality of visuals, and de-age actors. (Even create fake actors), Synch mouths in dubbed films and clone voices (See https://elevenlabs.io – one reporter was able to fool his mother using an artificial voice cloned from his own..) There are also aids to scriptwriting (e.g. suDowrite https://www.sudowrite.com), AI can improve and speed up editing and post-production, help in budgeting, scheduling etc,..

However, It creates non-human storytelling and there will be a loss of jobs since fewer tasks will require human labour..

Programming and web page design is becoming easier

Creation of “Synthetic Data”

Synthetic data is information that has been artificially generated in order to have the same characteristics as a real-world dataset but without including any real-world data…..It means businesses can train AI algorithms and perform tests and simulations without exposing private or sensitive information that might be contained in real-world data.”

It’s used in finance to train fraud detection algorithms to spot deliberately falsified transactions, in healthcare to avoid using sensitive patient data, and in retail and marketing to create synthetic customers and analyze their buying behaviour.

ChatGPT and the like use large amounts of electricity and water …

Is the current model environmentally sustainable?

Governments are trying to control AI

However it’s not easy to get consensus “In the race to rein in artificial intelligence, Western governments have hit a major bump in the road: they all want to win. “

Chat GPT and other Large Language Models are the things we use the most when searching the Internet in our browsers

  • ChatGPT – Is still crazy and seems to be getting stupider. It “Spouts credible nonsense.” “OpenAI seems to have the issue that it learns from humans all too well and humans in general are, well, not too bright.” https://www.sify.com/ai-analytics/why-chatgpt-getting-dumber-points-to-old-ai-problems/ The interface now reminds you to “check your facts” rather than pretending that what it regurgitates is true.
  • Edge users have Bing Chat AI which is running on ChatGPT 4. It has new features day by day. To try it out, Open the Edge browser in Windows / New Tab, click in the Search box and it will offer you the AI Chatbot. It gives search results in bullet points with references to its sources of information. In a query about Jávea It said you could go and see prehistoric cave paintings in the Montgó cave (not true).
  • Google Bard Experiment has just been released in Europe: https://bard.google.com It clearly states that it is experimental. It has access to the huge amount of data collected by Google services and presents images in its search results. Here’s how it compares with ChatGPT: https://www.sify.com/technology/comparing-googles-bard-with-chatgpt-whats-wrong-whats-bright/

Specialist aids

Developers have been creating specialist AI Tools – Here’s a list of the “50 best” Ai tools for different activities: Writing, Meetings, Images, Videos, Customer Support, Human resources and Recruiting…. . https://clickup.com/blog/ai-tools/

The list is getting longer by the day….By the way, these notes have been written by a human being, with some grammatical and spelling assistance from Grammarly, https://www.grammarly.com which is AI!
