What’s the best way to share my video clips privately with family and friends?

1. Make a DVD and post copies

Need blank DVD’s, DVD writer?

who has a DVD player these days?

How many copies to make and post?

2. Copy them to a memory stick and post them

How many memory sticks to buy and post?

Do recipients have the means to play the videos? – there are problems with TVs and some medi players beng able to play certain video file formats.

3. Send them as e-mail attachments

Maximum size e.g. Gmail – 25 Mb

Clogging up your post box and theirs!

4. Send them via WhatsApp – Maximum size 16 Mb; clog up your phone and theirs – You don’t know how much storage they have! Also, they need to have a WhatsApp account.

5. Upload them to Google Photos or Google Drive, then share the link – uses up some of your precious 15GB!

6. Upload them to Dropbox, Onedrive or iCloud then share the link – Storage limitations, as above and potential media player problems for the recipient

7. WeTransfer or Sprend

Upload files up to 2GB in size (used to be bigger!) The link to download the file is shared via e-mail. Uploaded files expire after 7 days.

8. Use Social Media such as Facebook – which allows videos of up to 240 minutes, 4GB (!) – this will be shared with your “Friends”. ..though I suppose you can make a subgroup of Friends? It’s tricky sharing videos via Messenger in Europe for some reason.

Note: Recipients must have a Facebook account.

TikTok (Instagram does not allow private videos) TikTok videos are all short (max 3 minutes) and long and thin!

9. YouTube

Upload your video clips to your YouTube channel from PC, Android and iPhone/iIPad

From a PC you need to log into YouTube studio: http://studio.youtube.com/

From a Phone use the YouTube App

You can share videos publicly, privately or not at all – though beware Google checks for copyright infringement and other misdemeanours.

Recipient only needs a: PC or a phone or an iPad to view the video. No Google account required.

With an “unverified” account the maximum video length is 15 minutes. Anyone can verify a YouTube account – all you will need is a phone number to prove your identity. Then the maximum file size you can upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less.

…can I use YouTube as a storage space for my videos?

Yes – space is unlimited (at present) ! But with some caveats.

… one of which is that YouTube compresses your video files hence losing some quality. e.g. a 178 MB video I uploaded was compressed to 54 MB by You Tube.
